Cheap GPS for your CarPC

I came across a fun piece of technology in my basement lately. a GP8 gps reciever module for a clarion AutoPC. I have 2 of these so I decided to look into the GPS to see what it would take to interface it to a real computer. It's far easier than I thought.

The main board has a 74ls07 buffer on it between the GPS module inside and the autopc wires. a standard ATX keyboard plug fits it nicely and you have the pins for RXD,TXD, VCC,GND and B/U 2400N81 is what the GPS wants for rs232 and a simple resistor on the txd of your computer will buffer the voltages down so you can talk to this GPS B/U is backup power while the other line is main power. tie them together and leave the GPS running all the time so you don't have to wait for a Fix when it powers up. it needs +5VDC

It's only a 8 bird receiver but hey, it's a cheap gps as they go for $25.00 on eBay all the time and it's ready for car use instead of messing with a module or regular GPS.
